Craigieburn Central Victoria

The building

The shopping centre represented a large green field retail development comprising of separate retail precincts culminating into the Town Centre concept. The centre includes Woolworths, Aldi and Coles supermarkets and major retailers Big W and Target and 160 specialty stores; and a cinema. The centre is approximately 50,000 sq m and the design includes four distinct colour-coded precincts with each of the quadrants leading to a town square, or central meeting point.

Main Street runs through the middle of Craigieburn Central with banking, medical and retail services.

The approach

The fire safety engineering strategy was developed with a focus towards optimising the open plan nature of the centre and balancing modern retail and life safety objectives. The fire safety risk engineering approach was applied to a number of issues including: rationalisation of egress provisions; detailed smoke hazard management systems supported by comprehensive modelling justification, rationalisation of fire ratings and a centralised approach to fire services intervention activities.
